What Are Full Dentures and How Do They Work?

Full dentures, sometimes called complete dentures, are removable oral appliances designed to replace an entire arch of missing teeth, either the upper jaw, the lower jaw, or both. They rest on the gum tissue and are custom-fitted to the unique contours of each patient’s mouth.

There are two primary types of full dentures:

Conventional Dentures

These are placed after the gum tissue has fully healed following extractions, typically several weeks to a few months after remaining teeth are removed. The fit tends to be more stable because the tissue has had time to settle.

Immediate Dentures

These are placed on the same day as extractions so the patient is never without teeth. Some adjustments may be needed as the gum tissue heals and reshapes over the following months.

For patients who want a more stable alternative, dental implant surgery may be worth exploring as a complement or alternative to traditional dentures. Dr. Kenneth Liszewski holds Diplomate status from the International Dental Implant Association, and our team can walk you through all available options based on your specific oral health needs. Individual candidacy varies, so a personalized consultation is always the best starting point.

The Core Benefits of Dentures

When patients ask about the benefits of dentures, what you need to know centers on function, confidence, and overall well-being. Tooth loss affects far more than appearance. It can alter how you speak, what you eat, and how you feel in social settings. Dentures may help restore many of these everyday functions.

Restored Ability to Eat and Speak

Many patients find that well-fitted dentures make it significantly easier to chew a broader range of foods and to speak more clearly. While there is typically an adjustment period, most patients adapt within a few weeks. Results vary by individual, and factors such as bone density and gum health can influence the fit over time.

Facial Structure Support

Missing teeth can cause the facial muscles and bone to change shape gradually. Dentures help support the lips and cheeks, which may contribute to a more youthful appearance for many patients. This is a benefit that is often overlooked in early conversations about tooth replacement.

Improved Confidence in Social Settings

Patients frequently share that replacing missing teeth has a meaningful impact on their willingness to smile, laugh, and engage with others. While we never promise specific emotional outcomes, research suggests that oral health and self-confidence are closely connected for many individuals.

Affordability, Candidacy, and What to Expect at Bayview Dental

Cost is a genuine concern for many patients considering dentures, and it is a conversation we encourage openly. Our SmilePlan in-house membership is an innovative alternative to traditional dental insurance designed to make treatment more accessible. We also work with CareCredit financing, and our team can help you explore affordable dental care options that fit your situation.

Are You a Candidate for Dentures?

Most adults who have experienced significant tooth loss may be candidates for full or partial dentures. Factors that your provider will evaluate include the health of remaining gum tissue, the density of the underlying bone, and your overall oral health. Patients with active gum disease or infection will typically need those conditions addressed before denture placement is recommended.

The Fitting Process

Fitting dentures is a multi-step process that involves impressions, measurements, trial fittings, and adjustments. Our practice uses advanced digital technology to support precise fabrication. Because our prosthetics come from U.S. dental labs, the quality and communication standards throughout the fabrication process are consistent and reliable.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Benefits of Dentures

How long does it typically take to adjust to wearing full dentures?

Most patients find that the adjustment period for full dentures lasts between four and eight weeks, though this varies by individual. During that time, your provider may make minor adjustments to improve comfort and fit. Speaking with your dental provider early in the process about any soreness or fit concerns can help shorten the adjustment timeline and make the transition more comfortable.

Can I sleep with my dentures in?

Most dental providers recommend removing dentures at night to allow the gum tissue to rest and to help maintain oral health. Removing dentures overnight also allows you to clean them thoroughly and soak them in a denture solution. Your provider at Bayview Dental Associates can give you specific guidance based on your situation and the type of denture you receive.

Will dentures affect how food tastes?

Upper dentures cover a portion of the palate, which may slightly affect taste perception for some patients, particularly early in the adjustment period. Most patients report that this becomes less noticeable over time. If taste changes persist or concern you, it is worth discussing with your provider during a follow-up appointment to rule out any underlying concerns.

Are there options for patients who want a more permanent solution?

Yes. Implant-supported dentures, sometimes called implant overdentures, offer a more stable and secure fit by attaching to dental implants placed in the jaw. Dr. Liszewski holds Diplomate status from the International Dental Implant Association, and our team can evaluate whether this option may be appropriate for you. Candidacy depends on bone density and overall oral health. Individual results may vary.

Does Bayview Dental offer payment options for patients without dental insurance?

Absolutely. We offer SmilePlan, our in-house membership program that serves as an accessible alternative to traditional dental insurance. We also accept CareCredit financing. Our team is happy to walk you through all available options so that cost does not become a barrier to getting the care you need. You can explore more on our dental financing and insurance page.
