Missing or Failing Teeth

Get It Back, and Much More

Losing teeth, or preparing to have them removed, brings a set of limitations that touch nearly every part of daily life. Meals may narrow down to soft foods because anything firmer causes discomfort. Speech can become unclear or feel unnatural. Smiling is still possible, but the thought of it may bring embarrassment, particularly when the gaps fall within your smile zone. Over time, if tooth loss leads to bone recession, the face itself can begin to look sunken and prematurely aged.

Several options exist to rebuild your smile, among them dental bridges and dental implants, which restore both function and appearance while protecting the jaw and offering exceptional longevity. Many patients are surprised by how quickly eating, speaking, laughing, and smiling feel normal again once their teeth have been replaced by the team at Bayview Dental Associates. If you are living with failing or missing teeth, reach out, and we will help you identify the replacement solution that fits your needs and gives you a complete, confident, healthy smile.

Life with Missing Teeth

Why Replace Damaged or Missing Teeth?

When treatments such as root canal therapy, gum disease care, and restorative dentistry are no longer effective, removing damaged, infected, or failing teeth becomes the better choice for protecting your dental health and your overall health. With the exception of wisdom teeth and extra teeth contributing to crowding, most teeth should be replaced once they come out. Beyond the toll tooth loss takes on quality of life, it can also set off a chain reaction throughout the mouth.

Natural tooth roots stimulate the bone that surrounds them. Once that stimulation disappears, the bone beneath the empty socket starts to break down. That deterioration tends to spread outward and can put neighboring teeth at risk as well. Replacing a tooth before significant bone loss develops helps you avoid further damage, along with the possibility of needing a bone grafting procedure later. As long as your bone is stable, or has been rebuilt through reconstructive treatment, you can choose among dental bridges, dentures, and dental implants to complete your smile.

Remedies for Missing Teeth

Dental Bridges

For a single missing tooth or several in a row, dental bridges are often the first option patients consider. A bridge consists of a series of connected crowns that span the space where teeth used to be. It relies on one or more neighboring teeth for support, known as abutment teeth, which means a portion of enamel must be removed from those teeth before the bridge is placed. Once in position, a bridge looks natural and keeps surrounding teeth from drifting out of alignment.

Dentures remain a proven and cost-effective answer to tooth loss. They rest over the gums, held in place by suction or adhesive cream, and can be taken out as needed. Both full and partial versions are available. Full dentures replace an entire arch of teeth, while partials fill in a few gaps in a row or scattered across an arch.

Dentures can also be secured directly to the jawbone with dental implants for added stability. This approach keeps the denture from slipping or rubbing against the gums, and the implants provide the bone stimulation that traditional dentures cannot. Patients with implant-supported dentures are typically able to enjoy a wider range of foods than standard dentures allow.

Dental implants are widely regarded as the leading tooth replacement option available today. They look remarkably natural and, with proper care, can last for decades. Implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth, or an entire arch. Because part of the implant functions as an artificial tooth root, it helps preserve the jawbone and, in turn, the shape of your face. Implants also restore the freedom to eat what you like, including hard, sticky, and chewy foods.
