Toothache
You Can Live Without Pain
Pain while eating, drinking, or speaking. Restless nights. Difficulty focusing. Whether mild or severe, a toothache has a way of disrupting everything else in your day. The underlying reason can be equally wide-ranging. On the simpler end, sensitivity may be the culprit, and something as small as switching toothpaste can bring relief.
At the other extreme sits an infection that has reached deep into the roots and calls for root canal therapy. Left unaddressed, a toothache can genuinely keep you from living the way you want to. General Toothaches
Since so many different issues can trigger tooth pain, we begin with a careful examination to pinpoint the actual source. A crack may be present that is impossible to detect with the naked eye. X-rays let us look past the enamel and see what is happening below the surface, including cavities that may be developing. Cavities form when bacteria take hold, a process driven by inconsistent oral hygiene and diets heavy in sugar.
When a cavity is found, we open a small access point through the enamel to reach the affected area. The interior of the tooth is then cleaned out, and a filling is placed to restore strength. If decay has compromised too much of the natural crown, a dental crown may be needed to give the tooth lasting support. Once the infection is gone, with help from over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers as needed, the ache typically fades quickly.
Root Infections
Infections that travel down into the roots tend to be especially painful. These narrow canals house the living tissue of the tooth, including the nerves and blood vessels. At that depth, a standard filling is no longer an option, and a more involved treatment known as a root canal is required.
Any procedure involving the inside of a tooth starts with making sure you are comfortable. From there, a small opening is created in the crown of the affected tooth. The diseased tissue is removed from the canals, which are then disinfected and shaped to receive gutta-percha, the filling material used specifically for root canals. A new crown is usually recommended afterward, since natural crowns can turn brittle following the procedure.
When Treatment Is Ineffective
Saving a natural tooth is always our preference, but there are situations where the damage or infection is simply too advanced. In those cases, extraction becomes the best path forward, relieving the pain and protecting your broader dental health by stopping the infection from spreading. Aside from wisdom teeth, most teeth that come out should be replaced, and for good reason. The jawbone tends to recede in areas where teeth are missing. Eating and speaking can start to feel awkward. Many people also feel self-conscious about the visible gap.
Replacing the tooth heads off those problems. Dentures and bridges are long-established options that continue to serve patients well. For those who want maximum stability, dental implants are usually the answer. Implants look, feel, and function much like natural teeth, and they are built for the long haul. Because they cannot decay, they are unlikely to ever cause a toothache of their own. In that sense, tooth pain sometimes marks the start of something better. Implants offer a second chance at a healthy, complete, attractive smile.
