A dental exam and checkup are routine preventive appointments designed to assess and maintain the health of your teeth, gums, and surrounding oral structures. It is one of the most important things you can do for your long-term health, and it is far more thorough than most people expect.

At Bayview Dental, a standard checkup includes a professional cleaning performed by one of our skilled dental hygienists, a comprehensive exam by your dentist, digital X-rays when appropriate, an oral cancer screening, and a full evaluation of your gum health. Together, these components give us a complete picture of where your oral health stands and what, if anything, needs attention.

We recommend that most patients schedule a dental exam and cleaning every six months. Some patients with a history of gum disease, a higher cavity risk, or other ongoing concerns may benefit from more frequent visits. Your dentist will help you determine the schedule that makes the most sense for your individual needs.

What is the Dental Exam and Checkup Procedure Like?

A standard checkup appointment at Bayview Dental typically runs about an hour for returning patients. New patient visits are scheduled for a bit longer so we have time to gather your health history and make sure we have a thorough baseline understanding of your oral health. Here is what you can expect:

Health History Review

Your hygienist will begin by reviewing your dental and medical history. Certain medications, health conditions, and lifestyle factors can directly affect your oral health, and having an accurate picture of your overall wellbeing helps us provide the most appropriate care. New patients will complete intake forms covering their dental history, current concerns, and any medications or conditions we should know about.

Digital X-Rays

We use digital X-rays to get a clear view of what is happening beneath the surface of your teeth and gums. Digital imaging produces high-resolution images with significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays, and the results are available immediately for your dentist to review. X-rays allow us to detect decay between teeth, evaluate bone levels, identify cysts or abnormalities, and assess the position of developing or impacted teeth.

Oral Cancer Screening

Your dentist will carefully examine the soft tissues of your mouth, including your lips, tongue, cheeks, throat, and the floor and roof of your mouth. We are looking for any unusual lesions, discolorations, or other changes that could indicate the early stages of oral cancer or other conditions. This screening takes only a few minutes and can be life-saving.

Gum Health Evaluation

Your hygienist will measure the depth of the spaces between your teeth and gums, called periodontal pockets, using a small instrument called a probe. Healthy pockets are shallow. Deeper readings can indicate the presence or progression of gum disease. This evaluation helps us track your gum health over time and identify any areas that need closer attention.

Professional Teeth Cleaning

Your hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from all surfaces of your teeth, including the tight spaces between teeth and along the gumline where buildup tends to accumulate most. The cleaning is finished with a professional-grade polishing paste that removes surface stains and leaves your teeth feeling smooth and refreshed.

Comprehensive Dental Exam

Your dentist will examine each tooth for signs of decay, cracks, wear, or damage, and review your X-rays and any clinical findings from the appointment. If anything requires follow-up care, your dentist will walk you through the recommended treatment, your options, and any associated costs so you can make an informed decision about next steps.

Oral Hygiene Guidance

Before you leave, your hygienist will share personalized tips for maintaining your oral health at home based on what they observed during your visit. Whether that means adjusting your brushing technique, incorporating flossing more consistently, or trying a specific product, we make sure you leave with practical guidance you can actually use.

Recovery from Dental Exams and Checkups

One of the best things about routine dental exams and cleanings is that there is essentially no recovery period. The vast majority of patients walk out of their appointment feeling great and go right back to their normal activities.

That said, a few things are worth keeping in mind after your visit:

• Some patients with sensitive gums experience mild tenderness or sensitivity for a day or two after a cleaning, particularly if significant tartar buildup was present. This is normal and resolves on its own.
• If you received a fluoride treatment, your hygienist may recommend waiting 30 minutes before eating or drinking to allow the fluoride to fully absorb.
• If dental X-rays revealed concerns or your dentist identified any issues during the exam, your care coordinator will help you schedule any necessary follow-up appointments before you leave.
• In rare cases where significant calculus buildup required more intensive scaling, a day or two of mild gum soreness is possible. Rinsing with warm saltwater can help soothe any discomfort.
