Dental Fillings

Rendering of teeth with 3 filling materialsWe have to say, and we’re in love with fillings. This might sound silly to you, especially if you are thinking about the sweet fillings that fill your mouth with glee: cake filling, cookie or creme filling, or pie filling - those are all good of course - in moderation. We aren’t talking about those kinds of fillings. Instead, we are talking about fillings that save your teeth. We love those kinds of fillings even better than pie or cake fillings because they prevent tooth loss and tooth decay. Fillings are some of the best tools we have in our arsenal. Want to hear more about fillings? Let BayView Dental give you more information about fillings.

Why Do We Love Fillings?

We understand that the conversation about dental fillings isn’t important to most people. However, it should be. Fillings are vital to the health of your teeth when we need to repair them. Usually, we have to use fillings when tooth decay is present. Tooth decay happens when the bacteria found in your mouth eat away at the surface of your teeth. If you aren’t brushing or flossing regularly, you may get a cavity. The cavity will continue to grow until you stop it- which can eventually lead you to severe tooth pain, and even the loss of a tooth. You don’t have the superpowers to stop it on your own- but we do.

When we discover the cavity, we can drill out the tooth decay. Filling the hole left by the cavity will prevent the tooth from decaying further. The tooth will be stronger with the filling, than with the infection. The earlier we catch the cavity and fill the tooth, the better your tooth is in the long run. Because it is so great for stopping tooth decay, we think fillings are one of the best ways we can keep tooth decay from spreading or growing.

What Do We Use to Fill Teeth?

People used to get their cavities filled with silver amalgam. However, some people had problems with chemicals in the silver amalgam fillings, such as mercury. Mercury is a poison, and no one wants that in their mouths. New silver fillings don’t contain any mercury, so they are better for your mouth. However, some people don’t like the look of silver fillings, because they want to keep a more natural look. Newer composite fillings are the same color as your natural teeth, which means no one has to know you have cavities except you.
