Oh, That History of Bad Teeth
While you may think you are the only person with bad teeth, in fact, you aren’t even close. Our ancestors’ teeth were far worse than ours ever were. That’s why you don’t see people smiling in paintings or photos. Your great-great-grandma didn’t smile in that family photo because she most likely had teeth that were discolored, cracked or broken.
While we always need teeth for chewing and speaking, they weren’t really considered for cosmetic purposes until movies. Because movies were made on film, it was important for people to look their best. Hollywood began to use veneers, which are shells made to fit over teeth to change their appearance. In fact, a local dentist in Hollywood , to make veneers in the late 1920s for actors on film. The first veneers were made of plastic or acrylic. These veneers were not permanent. Instead, they were attached to an actor’s teeth temporarily while they were filming. After veneers were first used, actors began coming to the dentist to have their teeth changed with veneers- and an industry was born.
Today, we aren’t using acrylic or plastic to make veneers. Instead, we use thin porcelain shells that are cemented onto your existing. This makes veneers a permanent part of your smile. We can use veneers to fix a multitude of sins within your mouth. If you have chipped teeth, or you have cracked teeth, veneers can completely change the look of your mouth. If you have teeth that are crowded or poorly spaced, veneers can change the look of your teeth as well. Veneers can even fix teeth that are discolored.
How to Care for Veneers
First, we want to craft veneers that look like your natural teeth. We take pictures of your teeth and use those to help us figure out what your new teeth should look great-great-grandma. We also match your veneers to your hair and eye color, as well as your skin tone. We will grind your tooth surface a little to make sure the cement for the veneers can get a good drip. Then we cement the veneers on your natural teeth. After that, how you care for your veneers is up to you. You will still need to brush and floss.
You also need to be careful with your veneers. Don’t chew hard objects with your veneers, and make sure you are wearing mouthguards if you play sports or grind your teeth at night. Do you need more information about veneers? Call BayView Dental at one of our 7 convenient locations now!
