Are You Spreading Gum Disease to Those Around You?

Posted on 11/16/2020 by BayView Dental
Are You Spreading Gum Disease to Those Around You?Gum disease results from bacteria in the mouth that cause inflammation under the gums. Some of the signs of gum disease include red, swollen and bleeding gums and bad breath. Poor oral hygiene and consumption of sugary foods encourage bacterial activity, increasing the risk of gum disease. While the disease is not contagious, these bacteria can spread through saliva from one person to another. Thus, if someone around you has gum disease, you should avoid contact with their saliva to prevent the disease. Among the ways that spread gum disease include kissing and sharing utensils.

Kissing

If you have poor oral hygiene or a compromised immune system, you can contact gum disease by kissing someone with gum disease. Parents with infants also risk spreading the disease to them through kissing, given their weak immune system. When a person with gum disease exchanges a kiss with another person, bacteria will spread from their mouth to the other person through the saliva, causing the disease.

Sharing Utensils

Since gum diseases are not contagious, you cannot spread it by sharing food or a drink with someone. However, if you have gum disease, bacteria in your saliva can remain on the outside of the cup or spoon you have used. If another person uses the utensil without cleaning it, the bacteria will spread to their mouth. The individual will then contact the disease if their immunity is low, or they have poor oral hygiene. Thus, if you have gum disease, you can protect your family and those around you by minimizing the sharing of utensils and personal items like toothbrushes, until you heal from the disease. By maintaining good oral hygiene, going for regular dental checkups and keeping your health in check, you will keep gum disease at bay. Contact our office today for more information on gum diseases.
