Fillings

If you have never had a cavity, good for you.  Cavities are very common, especially in young people that eat and drink excess amounts of sugar and don’t practice proper dental hygiene.   A cavity is simply a hole in your tooth.  Bacteria eats away at the tooth’s surface causing severe decay and damages the tooth’s structure.   Thankfully, the cure is simple in the form of fillings.

White Filling

Fillings as the name suggest, just fill up the hole that is in your tooth. Fillings are necessary because they prevent the bacteria, which can cause severe decay and protects the inner pulp from bacteria.  If you allow decay to continue, the inner pulp can become exposed to bacteria which can be extremely painful.  In this case, the only remedy left for is to consider root canal therapy.

There are different types of fillings.

Types of Fillings

Amalgam : Amalgam has been the most common filling material in the past century. The filling appears silver, as it is a combination of different metals held together in place by mercury, to form an alloy. These fillings are strong and long lasting, however, there are conflicting views as to the health consequences because it contains the element, mercury.  The dentists at BayView Dental do not offer amalgams as an option for filling cavities.

White (Composite): A white or composite filling made up of a resin that is tooth colored and gives a natural appearance.  White fillings are more expensive but they are strong and highly effective.  The main advantage of composite fillings is aesthetics, since dentists can blend shades to create a color nearly identical to that of the actual tooth.  The white filling bonds to the tooth to support the remaining tooth structure.  Fillings prevent breakage and insulate the tooth from bacteria and excessive temperature changes.
